Graffiti artist-turned-cause-celebre Shepard Fairey was placed on probation yesterday after pleading guilty to destruction of property charges for pasting posters to signs and electrical boxes in the city.

Fairey, famed for his iconic “Hope” portrait of President Obama, was sentenced to two years probation, ordered to pay a $2,000 fine, and agreed not to possess tools of the tagging trade while in Suffolk County.

Cops intercepted Fairey in February as he walked into the city’s Institute of Contemporary Art while en route to his opening night gala, where he also planned to act as DJ.
