She’s up to some great things and her book beautifully captures the “vivid and freaky” street art from the land of the midnight sun.

Artist Thordis Claessen, author of the Icelandic street art book, ICEPICK, was also there (far left) in addition to government official, Jakob Magnusson (second on the right).

Debates over art, personal expression and free space in Iceland seem to be heating up and it was an amazing event to be a part of.

We’ll make sure to keep you posted on what comes of the panel and the future of graffiti in Iceland.

Sumir telja graffit, graff, mikla list og vissulega leynast listaverk inn á milli. En vinsælasta form þess, “tag”, gengur fyrst og fremst út á að skrifa nafnið sitt og er þá útkoman oftast eins og málverk þar sem listamaðurinn skrifar nafn sitt í stað þess að mála myndina. Í New York-borg á valdatíð Guiliani var sú leið farin að banna það með öllu. Hugmyndin var sú að veggjakrot gerði það að verkum að fólk bæri minni virðingu fyrir lögunum og leiddist þar með út í aðra glæpi. Árangurinn lét ekki á sér standa, ofbeldisglæpir í borginni minnkuðu til muna. Þó verður að segjast eins og er að hugmyndin um að vopnaðir lögregluþjónar eltist við unglinga með spreybrúsa er á margan hátt óaðlaðandi. Í Hollandi var farin önnur leið. Þar eru unglingar hvattir til að graffa á ákveðnum stöðum, fá leiðsögn og jafnvel kennarar taka þátt. Besta graffið er síðan sýnt í sýningarsölum og graffararnir fá borgað fyrir vinnu sína. En engin hugmynd er svo góð að hún kalli ekki á einhverja gagnrýni. Margir graffarar telja einmitt að það sem er mest heillandi við graffið sé að það sé bannað …
